A Brief History of Nannup Lions

The Lions Club of Nannup roared into life in November 1982, and received its official Charter several months later. Its first President was Bill Dean, and the club began life with 34 members.

Two of those foundation members, - Jim Green and Jim Craigie - are still members of Nannup Lions and have remained the backbone of the club over the last 35 years. During this time the two Jims and their wives Isabelle and Di (both long time Lions)have been heavily involved in hundreds of community projects.

These have raised many thousands of dollars which have benefitted both the Nannup community and others affected by natural disasters such as bushfires.

For many years Nannup Lions have lead community fund raising for - and organisation of - health, sporting, cultural, and welfare support in Nannup and beyond. We remain devoted to Lions Objectives and Ethics, and urge any newcomers to our wonderful town to get involved as either Members or volunteers.

Kim Roycroft at Nannup Real Estate (0429 703521) is the Lions Membership Officer, and will invite you to attend one of our monthly dinners on a ‘no obligation, no charge’ basis. We just want to meet people looking for a fun way of meeting and helping the Nannup Community.

Projects

Projects

Over the past 35 years the Nannup Lions have undertaken many projects, including the building of a BMX track and providing the funds to fly a young girl to the Eastern States for transplant surgery. we even sent her family with her – and we brought them all home!

Nannup Lions Auction

Then there is the Lions Auction every year, which raises thousands of dollars by helping the community to recycle a wide range of goods. This year they even included a new leather covered recliner and a ‘tinnie’ on a trailer – good stuff and great value for buyers and the community.

Nannup Tiger

We have had family weekends, in which we hunted the Nannup Tiger, and we might even do this again? The first was a great hit and the poor old tiger is back in the news again....

There was funding for the new kindergarten, support for the Nannup School, and for many of its students.

Gold Nugget Raffle

Meanwhile, our current project is the Gold Nugget Raffle, in which we expect to raise $100 000 for stem cell research by our very own Lions Eye Institute. This extraordinary work is expected to provide restored sight to people with macula degeneration and other disabling eye diseases, and it’s a privilege to be able to help with funding.

And if you’d like to help – Great! Email us at nannup.lions@gmail.com

Events

Events are those Community activities which come up every year, sometimes because of emergencies within Nannup or other Australian communities. Our club was able to help with the damage caused by the huge bushfire which wiped out Yarloop nearly two years back, and the calls for help are never ending.

While many are health and emergency related, many more involve food for the masses at events such as the Music Festival and Flower & Garden Weekend. Then there are the firewood donations and raffles, bike rallies, bus tours, and a host of other requests for childrens’ parties (where the Lions train is a major attraction).

All these events and activities need volunteers, , and the Lions are in the forefront when it comes to helping. If you are looking for a way of getting a ‘feel good’ hit with a great bunch of Nannup’s finest, come along to a dinner meeting – the first one’s free

Just pop in an see Kim Roycroft (he’s the Lion in charge of membership) at Nannup Real Estate, and he’ll invite you to our next dinner meeting. See you there.

Facilities

Nannup Lions keep very little of the funds we raise for our own comfort and wellbeing. So there’s no fancy clubhouse or other relaxation amenities.

Instead, we make use of the pub and other commercial businesses where required, while supporting local service groups and sports clubs.

We do, however, have a small shed behind the ambulance headquarters, where we store equipment such as barbecues and all the other bits and pieces required for running an event.

As our annual auction gets closer, we always need storage space for donated items, and if you happen to have a spare shed or barn, we surely can use it!

Join Us

The Nannup Lions always welcome new members, and if you are not ready to commit to full membership, you may consider joining our growing band of volunteers?

Membership provides you with a network of respected.

Community leaders from around the world – but even more important, it brings you into contact with your own community. If you are new to Nannup, membership is a great way of getting to know the locals.

The Nannup Lions represent a cross section of townsfolk and country dwellers, with a wide range of general expertise and trade skills. They have one thing in common, and that is a strong desire to help their fellow men, women and children. If you share this altruistic need, then come and join us.

Our volunteers too are a vital part of the club, providing support when members simply cannot cover all the activities required for the smooth running of projects and events. We are grateful for any help, any time, so come along and get involved!

You can always send us an email for more information, or call into Nannup Real Estate and ask for Kim. He’s in charge of membership, and will gladly answer questions.
